What to look for when you are comparing LASIK prices

Double check that you are getting a "per eye" price. Ask about the cost of pre operative and post operative consultations. And know the difference between types of LASIK, namely, Traditional LASIK, PRK, Intralase (bladeless), and Custom LASIK.

Where to go to learn about LASIK prices near you

First, know where to look to find the price for LASIK. If you live in Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, or New Mexico, you can use MedFindr to easily find prices for nearly every LASIK provider near you. That is because we have talked to hundreds of LASIK providers in these states, and we've compiled their reported (we say reported because not all of them have confirmed their price information) prices so they are easy to compare.

We've also gathered ratings and whatever pictures we can find that show the clinic, some doctor information as well--whatever we think will help you as you try to narrow down what LASIK providers to consider.

However, if you are looking for LASIK and you live outside of one of these states, it won't be so easy. Researching online usually only gets you very generic information (the average LASIK price in the US, blah blah blah). Some facilities do share their prices on their website, but this is rare. This means the only way to get the price is by asking the eye center directly. Calling an eye center usually will work, but you may need to leave your phone number with them so that their LASIK coordinator can get back to you. Sometimes sending a message via Facebook or Instagram can also work.

Questions you should ask

When gathering price information you must be sure you are comparing apples to apples. With LASIK, the standard is to have a price PER EYE. No every clinic will give you the price per eye, so make sure the receptionist or LASIK coordinator is giving you a price per eye.

There are extra costs associated with LASIK as well. Possible extra (hidden) costs associated with LASIK include consultations and medication costs. Fortunately, it is common for clinics to waive the cost of the initial assessment. Also, most offer free post operative consultations for a certain number of months (usually 3 months to a year). Medications, such as post operative eye drops, may also be provided by some LASIK providers. Even though most of the time the cost of the consultations is covered in the price of the LASIK, it is still wise to ask just to make sure.

Another consideration is the type of LASIK you are asking about. There are multiple types of LASIK, and many websites cover the differences between these types of LASIK very well. To summarize, there is traditional LASIK, Intralase (bladeless), and Custom LASIK. (There is also PRK, but generally this is viewed as a LASIK alternative, not a type of LASIK itself.)

When LASIK is performed, it involves reshaping the cornea to improve a person's vision. A flap is created in the cornea and the layer below the flap is reshaped by using a laser. This flap can be created with a specialized blade, or it can be created with a laser (Intralase LASIK). Theoretically, creating this flap in the cornea using a laser is more precise and leads to fewer complications.

Custom LASIK refers to how the eye is reshaped (after the flap is created). Wavefront technology is used to created a 3D image of the idea. This information is then used to inform the doctor who uses this added information and a computer guided laser to customize the shaping of the eye to meet a patient's particular needs.

In summary, ask if the eye center if the price they are giving you the price of Traditional LASIK, Intralase or bladeless LASIK, Custom LASIK, or some combination of Traditional/Intralase and Custom LASIK. Surprisingly, many of the receptionists you talk with will be unsure when answering this question. That is why it is best to come to a site like MedFindr which works to verify this information for each and every eye center. (Sorry if information is not available for your state yet, we're working on that.)
